She Noticed the Gas Station Cashier Was Pregnant. The Next Day, She Asked a Question That Made Them Family

Some families are planned for years. This one started with small talk at a gas station counter in Jackson, Georgia.

And it all came down to one question that a regular customer worked up the courage to ask.

D’Amber Davis stopped at the same Central Georgia gas station nearly every day. Behind the register was a young cashier named Katelyn Sparks.

They always talked. The weather, the day, the little things you chat about with someone you see all the time.

Then one day, D’Amber noticed something she had somehow missed before.

Katelyn was pregnant.

The Day Everything Changed at the Counter

“Katie looked a little big today,” D’Amber told 13WMAZ. “So, you know, I didn’t say anything.”

What made that day different was who was riding along with her.

“My son, he was with me,” she said. “He normally doesn’t be with me either, so that’s what kind of sparked the conversation up.”

Katelyn was about 33 weeks along. That’s well into the third trimester, with only weeks to go.

And as the two women talked, Katelyn shared something hard. According to D’Amber, she said she wasn’t able to take care of the baby.

A lot of people would have offered a kind word and gone on with their day.

D’Amber couldn’t stop thinking about it.

She had actually thought about adoption before. She had even browsed the Georgia adoption website.

But in her mind, that was a someday plan. She wanted to finish school first and get back on solid financial footing.

“Not right now, but I did in the future,” she said.

That plan changed in an instant.

“In my mind I’m just like, instantly, I got to get this baby,” D’Amber said. “Not knowing nothing. I just know I got to get this baby.”

“Mama, We Gotta Get That Baby”

Mama, we gotta get that baby

D’Amber’s son was in the car with her when she made up her mind.

She didn’t have to explain much. He already felt the same way.

“My son looked at me and he said, ‘Mama, we gotta get that baby,'” she said. “And there was confirmation.”

It wasn’t a perfect time, and she knew it.

D’Amber had recently graduated and works for herself. She said her income wasn’t what it normally would be.

She didn’t have it all figured out. She went anyway.

The very next day, she walked back into that gas station.

She asked Katelyn if she would be willing to let her take the baby in.

Katelyn said yes.

Just like that, two women who knew each other from a cash register were about to become part of each other’s lives forever.

It’s hard to imagine what that moment felt like for either of them.

One woman was trusting someone with the most important thing in her life. The other was promising to be worthy of that trust.

Taking Care of the Mom, Too

As they started making plans, D’Amber learned something that worried her.

Katelyn hadn’t had any prenatal care during her pregnancy.

So D’Amber didn’t just get ready for a baby. She stepped in to help the mother, too.

She helped Katelyn find a doctor. Then she drove her to an OB assessment at Atrium.

According to D’Amber, everything came back normal.

When the big day came, Katelyn gave birth to a healthy baby boy named Nolan.

He weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces. And D’Amber brought him home.

She thought she was the one doing the rescuing. In her own words, it turned out to be the other way around.

“I thought he needed me, but I really needed him,” D’Amber said.

“I love my kids to death, but I also love Nolan, and I don’t love him any different,” she said. “He’s my own. He’s my son. He’s my life. He’s my world.”

Today, 13WMAZ reports, D’Amber is adopting Nolan.

Two Moms, One Little Boy

Here is the part of the story that has people from all over reaching out to them.

Katelyn didn’t disappear from Nolan’s life after the hospital. D’Amber never wanted her to.

“I’m his mom, but that’s his bio mom, and he will forever know that,” D’Amber said.

“I’m making sure that he knows exactly where he comes from,” she said. “I would never take that from him.”

For Katelyn, staying close has given her something she didn’t expect: peace of mind.

“I can still see he’s happy, safe, and thriving even with me being around,” she said.

So many adoption stories end with a goodbye. This one ended with a bigger table.

The bond has reached far past the baby, too.

D’Amber says the relationship helped bring Katelyn back together with her own mother. It also gave Katelyn more time with her other son.

“She’s helped me get closer to my entire family through this more than I thought it would,” Katelyn said.

The two women don’t describe themselves as just friends anymore. They call it sisterhood.

“She’s more or less like my big sister,” Katelyn said.

Love Makes a Family

D’Amber started a TikTok page called “Love Makes a Family” to share their journey.

Her goal is simple. She wants to show people that family is about love, not biology.

The page has grown fast. D’Amber calls her followers her family, and she says people from all over have reached out with messages of support.

“To be a family, y’all don’t have to have the same DNA or blood,” she said. “It’s just about being there for a person, a child.”

She also has a message for other adoptive and foster parents out there.

Stay positive, she says. And don’t let the negativity get to you.

Now little Nolan is even getting a moment on a national stage. He has been entered in the Baby of the Year competition.

According to 13WMAZ, one baby will win $25,000, appear in a national ad campaign with The Honest Company, and be featured in Variety magazine.

The competition also supports Baby2Baby, a national nonprofit that provides essentials to children in need.

But for the two women who love him, the prize already came on the day he was born.

Think about how close this story came to never happening.

If D’Amber’s son hadn’t been riding along that day. If she had looked away. If she had decided it was none of her business.

Instead, a daily stop for gas turned into a son, a sister, and a family nobody could have planned.

Sometimes the people who change our lives are standing right in front of us, ringing up our snacks.

We just have to be brave enough to ask the question.

And sometimes the answer is yes.
