At the Kettering pasture gate, Sheriff Cole Pruitt admits what he really pulled out of the creek twenty-three years ago. Annie finally says who was driving that night, and the locksmith remembers a 3 a.m. call that changes everything.
At the Kettering pasture gate, Sheriff Cole Pruitt finally tells the truth about the night Annie’s car went into the creek 23 years ago. Then Annie makes a choice Rita never saw coming, and Vera reads a page that changes everything.
At the Kettering east pasture gate, Rita Lane counts eleven pages, spots Hank’s old barn coat, and opens a blue folder of her own. Then Sheriff Cole Pruitt follows Willow’s hoofprints through the frost, and one old accident report changes everything Lana thought she knew about him.
Lana shuts the laptop before Sheriff Cole Pruitt can see the last picture on the hayloft card, and what it shows sends her and June riding Willow in the dark to the Kettering east pasture gate, where Annie is waiting, and so is someone else.
Lana makes Sheriff Cole Pruitt show what he took from his glovebox and finally learns where he was nine days ago. A memory card from the hayloft shows who really stamped the twelfth page, and whose hand was holding the courthouse door.
The dark car beats Lana, June and Sheriff Cole Pruitt back to the farm. Behind the barn sits Cole’s own unmarked car, up in the hayloft is a still-warm sleeping bag, and one text from Nadine’s number turns everything Lana believed about the sheriff upside down.
Annie’s note in the swing chain, her replies on Nadine’s laptop, and a freshly stamped page slipped into Clay’s folder lead Lana and June to the grain elevator, where a warm copier, a wall of hayloft photos and one weigh ticket point to the sheriff’s own car.
June explains why she signed Royce’s name in the locksmith book and drove his truck to pick up Rita Lane at dawn. Rita’s three warnings, a blue folder hidden under the hens, and Nadine’s open laptop turn the whole family upside down.
Royce’s blue Chevy is still warm, red truck-stop clay in the tires and the seat shoved all the way up. The farm phone called Rita at 5:31 AM. Then Sheriff Cole Pruitt finds a torn locksmith page in the glovebox, and June finally speaks.
Annie Kettering drives up our lane at sunrise and tells Vera the truth: Rita is her sister, the forger who made her disappear. But the text that sent Annie to the jail came from a phone inside June’s house.
