A Kitten’s Paw Was Stuck in a Sewer Crack. The Firefighter Who Freed Him Wasn’t Done Yet

The call sounded small. A kitten, somewhere down in a sewer, unable to get out. But when firefighter-paramedic Jordan Grassmuck crawled down to reach him, she found out why he couldn’t move, and it turned a quick rescue into slow, careful work with a hammer.

But it’s what she did a couple of weeks later that has people smiling.

A Cry From Under the Street

A tiny kitten trapped in a sewer

The call went to the Wentzville Fire Protection District, west of St. Louis, a couple of weeks before the story made the news. The district later shared what happened, and First Alert 4 (KMOV) reported it on Oct. 8.

A kitten was stuck in a sewer. Not just lost or hiding, either. One of his paws was caught in a crack, wedged so tightly that he could not pull it free.

For an animal that small, that is a frightening place to be. He couldn’t run, he couldn’t hide, and every time he pulled, the crack kept its grip.

She Crawled In After Him

Grassmuck, a firefighter and paramedic with the district, didn’t try to coax him out from a distance. She crawled into the sewer to get to him.

It is the kind of work nobody pictures when they think about firefighting. No hoses, no sirens. Just a tight, dark space underground and a scared animal that needs someone to come all the way to him.

A Hammer, a Crack and a Lot of Patience

Once she reached the kitten, the problem was clear. Pulling on his leg could have hurt him badly. So Grassmuck took the slow way.

According to the district, she used a hammer to carefully chisel away at the crack, bit by bit, until the kitten’s paw finally came loose.

Every tap had to be gentle enough not to hurt the paw and steady enough to keep making progress, with a frightened kitten just inches away. It is patient, careful work, and it worked. The kitten was free.

Plenty of rescues end right there, with the animal handed off and the crew heading back to the station. This one didn’t.

Meet Dart

On Monday, Grassmuck brought the kitten home. For good.

He has a name now, too: Dart.

The little guy who was stuck in a crack under the street a couple of weeks ago now has a forever home with the very person who crawled in after him. “What started as a rescue call,” as First Alert 4 put it, “ended in a kitten finding his forever home.”

If you’ve ever wondered whether rescuers get attached to the animals they save, Dart is your answer.

Healing, One Step at a Time

Dart is still recovering from his injury. But the district shared the news everyone was hoping for: he is already starting to put weight on his leg.

For a kitten whose paw was trapped in concrete not long ago, every wobbly step is a small victory.

His story is also a good reminder for the rest of us. If you ever find a cat or kitten stuck in a drain, pipe or crack, don’t try to yank it free. A trapped leg is easy to injure. Call your local fire department or animal control, stay nearby so you can show them where the animal is, and keep things quiet so it stays calm.

Sometimes the help that shows up is willing to crawl into a sewer. And sometimes, if you’re very lucky, it takes you home.
