A Puppy Was Found Bald and Hurting by the Side of the Road. Months Later, Nobody Can Believe It’s Him

Most people driving home after time away are thinking about traffic and unpacking. One woman heading back to St. Louis from the Lake of the Ozarks noticed something small at the side of the road and decided she couldn’t keep driving.

It was a puppy. And he was in rough shape.

The little dog was only about three months old. He was missing nearly all of his fur, and the skin underneath was red and irritated. He was clearly hurting, and he was clearly alone.

The woman got him safely into her car and brought him to Stray Rescue of St. Louis, where the team named him Hemi.

When the rescue introduced him to its followers in July, the update was heartbreaking. Instead of bouncing around and chewing on toys like a normal puppy, Hemi seemed too uncomfortable to play at all.

The Diagnosis

A medicated bath to soothe his skin

Hemi had demodectic mange, a skin condition caused by an overgrowth of Demodex mites. It looks alarming, but it is generally not considered contagious through everyday contact between dogs, and it can be treated.

That gave his caregivers a plan. They started with a medicated bath to soothe his sore skin, followed by treatment for the mange itself. And the rescue made the little guy a promise: better days were coming.

A Foster Home to Heal In

Healing in a foster home

Medicine was only part of what Hemi needed. A puppy who had been found alone beside a road also needed somewhere quiet and safe, with someone close by to comfort him.

So Hemi went to a foster home. There, his foster mom gave him the patience and one-on-one attention he needed while his body healed. Little by little, his skin calmed down. And slowly, his personality started showing up right along with his fur.

By Fall, a Brand-New Dog

By fall, a brand-new dog

When Stray Rescue shared an update this fall, people could hardly believe it was the same dog. The puppy who arrived in July with almost no hair had grown his coat back, just in time for cooler weather.

The change wasn’t only on the outside. According to the rescue, Hemi had become a much happier dog. The puppy who once couldn’t enjoy his toys was finally romping and playing the way a puppy should.

“Good job, Hemi! You deserved this do-over!” the rescue wrote.

The Best News of All

His foster mom is keeping him

Then came the part of the update that made hearts melt.

Fostering usually means caring for a dog until he is ready to go to a permanent family somewhere else. But after watching Hemi heal in her home, his foster mom realized she couldn’t let him go.

“His foster mom is adopting him, she couldn’t say goodbye after watching him heal, heart and soul, in her home,” Stray Rescue announced.

So Hemi doesn’t have to start over with strangers. He gets to stay exactly where he first learned what it feels like to be safe and loved.

His whole story began because one driver chose to pull over. After that, it took a rescue team, a treatment plan, a patient foster mom and plenty of supporters to give a hurting little puppy his second chance.

If you’ve ever wondered whether stopping for an animal in need really makes a difference, just look at Hemi now.
