Benny is 14 years old. For a golden retriever, that is a long, full life of tennis balls, car rides and naps in sunny spots. So when the old dog ended up at the bottom of a 20-foot-deep ditch after a hurricane, with no way to climb out, his family knew he could not save himself.
Firefighters in Tallahassee, Florida, made sure he didn’t have to.
A Storm, a Ditch and an Old Dog

Hurricane Isaias left plenty of mess behind in North Florida: soaked yards, downed branches and drainage ditches running full. On Saturday morning, October 10, one of those ditches had an unexpected visitor.
According to the Tallahassee Fire Department, Benny was stuck at the bottom of a ditch about 20 feet deep. The sides were steep and slick from the storm. For a senior dog with old hips and tired legs, climbing out was simply impossible.
Anyone who has loved an older dog can picture it. The worried pacing at the top. The calling of his name. The feeling of helplessness when someone you love is right there, but just out of reach.
Station 6 Answers the Call

Crews from Tallahassee Fire Department Station 6 responded that morning. Rescuing a large dog from the bottom of a deep, muddy ditch is not as simple as it sounds. Golden retrievers are big, and a scared or hurting animal can panic when strangers reach for it.
The firefighters worked their way down, reached Benny and lifted him back up to solid ground. Local reports say Benny was not injured and was doing well afterward.
In its post about the rescue, the department said its crews are always happy to lend a helping hand, especially when it means getting a furry family member home safely.
“A Furry Family Member”

That phrase says everything. To the people who love him, Benny isn’t “a dog in a ditch.” He’s the one who greets them at the door, who has been part of every birthday and every holiday for 14 years. Reports said Benny’s owner was extremely grateful.
After a hurricane, fire crews are stretched thin. They clear roads, check on people and respond to call after call. Taking time to climb into a ditch for a senior golden retriever is exactly the kind of small kindness people remember.
Why Senior Dogs Need Extra Care After Storms

Stories like Benny’s are a good reminder for every pet owner during hurricane season:
- Keep pets on a leash for walks after a storm. Familiar yards can change overnight, and ditches and drains can fill with fast water.
- Older dogs tire quickly and may not be able to climb out of slopes or water they once handled easily.
- Check fences and gates for storm damage before letting pets out alone.
- If your pet gets trapped, don’t climb in after it. Call your local fire department. They have the training and the gear.
Home Where He Belongs

Today Benny is back home, probably sleeping off the most exciting morning of his life. He has a story now, and a whole crew of firefighters who will remember the old golden they carried out of the mud.
Sometimes the best rescues aren’t the biggest ones. Sometimes it’s just one old dog, one deep ditch, and a team of people who decided he was worth the climb.
