When two orphaned raccoon kits died because no rehabilitator had room for them, veterinarian Paul Bookbinder and his wife Sarah promised it would never happen again. They built a raccoon rehabilitation center on 53 acres in Earlville, New York, and estimate they have helped more than 800 raccoons.
The night before Roze Mulen returned to her nursing job after two months away for her mental health, a cashier named Tim at the Trader Joe’s in Bloomington, Minnesota, asked how she was doing and actually listened. Then he walked away and came back with flowers and chocolates.
Royce finally reads the four lines Clay wrote in Wade’s tally book on the day Lana’s mother died. They change everything Nadine believed about her husband, force Cole to confess the secret he has carried for twenty years, and send Deke back to the truck for what was hidden under the seat.
Tillie’s owners surrendered her to a Philadelphia shelter and asked for euthanasia, saying she was old, not eating and falling over. Then she walked into the Pennsylvania SPCA’s hospital wagging her tail, and a New Jersey couple who love senior dogs took her home.
Catherine Breed, 33, swam about 900 miles down the whole California coast in 111 days, from the Oregon border to the Mexico border. She fought cold water, sharks, a current running the wrong way and polluted water near the border, then swam ashore at Coronado to cheers.
The person who stepped out of Wade Pruitt’s old white Ford knows Lana’s name, and he has been watching her family for weeks. Then Nadine opens a little brown book that sat in the glovebox for twelve years, and Cole arrives in time to read the last page.
Lana tells Cole the text was a wrong number, then reads the rest of Clay’s letter while he searches the dark yard. What it says about the sheriff changes everything. At midnight she walks to the grain elevator to meet Nadine, and a pair of high beams comes on.
Elyria, Ohio firefighters and their dive team rescued a dog trapped on a log in the Black River just upstream of a low-head dam. They floated him to shore in a life ring, named him River, and now he is waiting at the county kennel for his family.
Fitchburg, Massachusetts Fire Chief Dante Suarez was having lunch with his wife in Luquillo, Puerto Rico, when a kitchen fire broke out next door. With no sprinklers and no gear, he borrowed extinguishers from the neighbors and kept the fire from spreading.
Royce finally reads the letter his brother Clay wrote the night before Lana’s mother died. The second page names the man Clay was afraid of, and it hits closer to the sheriff than anyone expected. Then a photo arrives from the dark yard outside.
